Diamond Carat
The Carat is the weight of the diamond.
1 carat weighs 200 milligrams. It is around the weight of 4 grains of
rice. Hence a 1 carat diamond is also known as a 4-grainer.
A 1 carat diamond is also referred as a 100-point diamond. Likewise,
a 50-point diamond is a diamond that weighs half a carat.
Buying short
Here's a little trick.
When you are to buy a 1 carat diamond, go for a diamond
slightly less than 1 carat. That's called buying short.
A 0.95 carat diamond looks as big as the 1 carat diamonds
, but costs a
lot less.
Likewise 1.4 carat diamonds look
as big as the 1.5 carat diamonds
You could get the 2.4 carat diamonds
instead of the 2.5 carat diamonds
The 2.8 carat diamonds instead of the 3 carat diamonds
There is a big price jump when a diamond reaches the next carat or
half carat size..
That is purely because of the fantastic marketing done by the jewelry
industry
:-)
That is a useful trick to know
Warning: Don't try this for an engagement ring. You wouldn't want her
to go on for the rest of your married life, regretting that she did not
get the full carat diamond. It is not worth the angst.
